Boston 2004

October 2004 saw our annual pilgrimage to Bean town, Boston. Staying at the Irish Embassy (or Pikey Ville), with a bunch of pissed Irish illegal immigrants was truly a highlight. Perfect pre-race conditioning was aided substantially by the Irish, who saved us from a mouse in our bedroom, by battering it with an ice hockey stick. Despite the freezing temperatures inside the building, they then preceded to party all night in celebration. A few pisses in the bedroom corner and a couple of death threats later and race day was upon us.

Race was shortened as Americans cant row on water with a few ripples on it. This allowed us to break the previous course record by some margin and knock 4mins off of HB's previous best time. Despite not having a working cox box -although a kind marshal did announce it over his radio! - we had a good row, avoiding hitting any bridges unlike the USA national team! A course commentator was head saying "Hilde Bedee, from Enggland, rating 23", hopeful it was just our fluid style that made it look so relaxed, compared to the "Time on the slide, is time wasted" approach.

The rest of the week was spend trying blag being 21, to get hold of alcohol, in anyway possible -including donkey who spoke to one bar bouncer for an hour! Getting stash was also high on the agenda, which lead to the immortal line: "who did you steal that off?" when speaking to a GB coach, in reference to his Leander fleece. But unfortunately no Resolute flag could be had!

A few good nights were had at YHI, by smuggling alcohol up the fire escape and ordering 18 inch pizzas from next door. Duty free sambuca was enjoyed by all. Gobbler did some free style MCing. Ferret made friends with a squirrel. Ed was violated while "asleep" and Donkey went for a ride with pimp daddy Reggie and then thought it appropriate to clean the kitchen floor.
